In the past, all-in-one bridge cameras have provided a means of getting a long zoom range in relatively compact and affordable package. That all changed with Sony’s launch of the original RX10 in 2013. Now, with the RX10 IV, Sony has completely revised the internals, adding the stacked-CMOS sensor and Bionz X processor previously seen in its RX100 V pocket camera.
Most SLR cameras permit upright and laterally correct viewing through use of a roof pentaprism situated in the optical path between the reflex mirror and viewfinder. Light, which comes both horizontally and vertically inverted after passing through the lens, is reflected upwards by the reflex mirror, into the pentaprism where it is reflected several times to correct the inversions caused by the lens, and align the image with the viewfinder. When the shutter is released, the mirror moves out of the light path, and the light shines directly onto the film (or in the case of a DSLR, the CCD or CMOS imaging sensor). The Canon Pellix film camera was an exception to the moving mirror system, wherein the mirror was a fixed beamsplitting pellicle.

Jump up ^ One was patented in 1861 (Thomas Sutton), but it is not clear if a second example was ever produced; Calvin Rae Smith’s design of a Patent Monocular Duplex camera was advertised and sold. Spira, The History of Photography, 119.
The Lumix DMC-ZS200 bridge camera, which includes a 15x optical zoom (24-360mm) and a 1-inch 20.1-megapixel sensor. This lightweight and very portable camera also includes 4K video, a 3-inch touchscreen and an electronic viewfinder. It will be available mid-March for $799.99.
Image sensors used in DSLRs come in a range of sizes. The very largest are the ones used in “medium format” cameras, typically via a “digital back” which can be used as an alternative to a film back. Because of the manufacturing costs of these large sensors the price of these cameras is typically over $6,500 as of May 2014.
Digital cameras are an essential piece of equipment for photographers and filmmakers. At Park Cameras you’ll find one of the widest selections of digital cameras anywhere in the UK, consisting of compact cameras, mirrorless cameras, digital SLRs from beginner to enthusiast to professional, video camcorders, and many more besides.
White balance On digital cameras, electronic compensation for the color temperature associated with a given set of lighting conditions, ensuring that white light is registered as such on the imaging chip and therefore that the colors in the frame will appear natural. On mechanical, film-based cameras, this function is served by the operator’s choice of film stock or with color correction filters. In addition to using white balance to register natural coloration of the image, photographers may employ white balance to aesthetic end, for example, white balancing to a blue object in order to obtain a warm color temperature.
The largest sensors you’ll find in affordable CSCs are APS-C ones, used in cameras from Fujifilm and Sony. Of course, Sony has now gone even further, adopting full-frame sensors in the top-end A7-series. These provide the best image quality among CSCs, rivalling pro DSLRs.
Early DSLRs lacked the ability to show the optical viewfinder’s image on the LCD display – a feature known as live preview. Live preview is useful in situations where the camera’s eye-level viewfinder cannot be used, such as underwater photography where the camera is enclosed in a plastic waterproof case.
The 360-degree camera can take picture or video 360 degrees using two lenses back-to-back and shooting at the same time. Some of the cameras are Ricoh Theta S, Nikon Keymission 360 and Samsung Gear 360. Nico360 was launched in 2016 and claimed as the world’s smallest 360-degree camera with size 46 x 46 x 28 mm (1.8 x 1.8 x 1.1 in) and price less than $200. With virtual reality mode built-in stitching, Wifi, and Bluetooth, live streaming can be done. Due to it also being water resistant, the Nico360 can be used as action camera.
Pair it up with one of the wide range of WR-designated Pentax lenses and the camera is dust and splash proof – something that you don’t often get on a camera at this price. The large grip gives plenty of space for controls, and the K-70 makes use of it by including twin electronic control dials front and rear, in contrast to most other cameras at this price point which usually only have one.
Digital single-lens reflex camera (DSLR) Used by professionals and amateur photography enthusiasts alike, a DSLR camera is the best option if you want high-level control over your photos. You can use different lenses to create different effects, for example, pick a wide-angle one for landscapes or a macro lens for extreme close-up shots.
Like SLRs DSLRs typically use interchangeable lenses (1) with a proprietary lens mount. A movable mechanical mirror system (2) is switched down (exact 45-degree angle) to direct light from the lens over a matte focusing screen (5) via a condenser lens (6) and a pentaprism/pentamirror (7) to an optical viewfinder eyepiece (8). Most of the entry-level DSLRs use a pentamirror instead of the traditional pentaprism.
“After his camera was stolen from his room in the orphanage, he switched to an iPhone for his photography, reasoning that the image quality of a big, heavy camera was less important than the freedom of a cell phone. ‘Quality? Screw it, I’d sketch things with a pencil if I could draw,’ he wrote in a blog post.”
Essentially point-and-shoot cameras with waterproofing, these devices can be used when swimming, scuba diving, or wherever you’re afraid of your camera getting wet. Often, they will have some ruggedness built in, so you can drop or knock them around without too much fear of breaking the camera. They’re ideal for backpacking or outdoor trips when weight is a primary concern, or as a starter camera for a child who might have a tendency to drop things.
In the job posting, the Times’ describes this role as “one of the most important and high-profile jobs in visual journalism.” If you’re looking for a high profile job in photojournalism, you could do a lot worse than being Photo Director at The Gray Lady.
Note that while there aren’t as many lenses to choose from, Pentax optics are of excellent quality. Nearly all third-party lens manufacturers offer their products with a Pentax K-mount too, so you won’t lose out in that respect either.
For pro sports, you’ll see bigger cameras on the sidelines. They don’t pack as much resolution as SLRs used to cover weddings and events, but they fire off images at much higher burst rates—usually about 10fps with continuous tracking and exposure. Sony has an intriguing alternative out there in the mirrorless space, the a9. Lighter and less expensive than competing SLRs, it locks and fires at an incredible 20fps and records video in 4K.
Since it is much easier to manufacture a high-quality linear CCD array with only thousands of pixels than a CCD matrix with millions, very high resolution linear CCD camera backs were available much earlier than their CCD matrix counterparts. For example, you could buy an (albeit expensive) camera back with over 7,000 pixel horizontal resolution in the mid-1990s. However, as of 2004, it is still difficult to buy a comparable CCD matrix camera of the same resolution. Rotating line cameras, with about 10,000 color pixels in its sensor line, are able, as of 2005, to capture about 120,000 lines during one full 360 degree rotation, thereby creating a single digital image of 1,200 Megapixels.
Box cameras were introduced as a budget level camera and had few if any controls. The original box Brownie models had a small reflex viewfinder mounted on the top of the camera and had no aperture or focusing controls and just a simple shutter. Later models such as the Brownie 127 had larger direct view optical viewfinders together with a curved film path to reduce the impact of deficiencies in the lens.
The release of the K-1 in 2016 finally redressed this, giving existing Pentax APS-C DSLR owners a viable full-frame upgrade path. Better still, the K-1 is a fantastic camera in its own right that follows the established Pentax brief of providing outstanding value for money.
The focal length of the lens is also important to acknowledge as the size of this determines the angle of view. A larger focal length means a bigger zoom and fewer subjects in the frame and conversely a shorter focal length will capture more exposure of the scene in the image and provide a wider angle.
The first such modular camera was the Minolta Dimâge V in 1996, followed by the Minolta Dimâge EX 1500 in 1998 and the Minolta MetaFlash 3D 1500 in 1999. In 2009, Ricoh released the Ricoh GXR modular camera.
Moving up to the $200 to $400 price nets more modern CMOS image sensors and very long zoom lenses—30x is the standard at this point. For the most part video is still 1080p, and you’ll also see some cameras with small electronic viewfinders, Raw shooting capability, and very quick autofocus. Pure image quality is better than a smartphone, with the real advantage being the zoom lens. There are also several models that are waterproof available in this price range.
Since the technology became widespread in the 1970s, SLRs have become the main photographic instrument used by dedicated amateur photographers and professionals. Some photographers of static subjects (such as architecture, landscape, and some commercial subjects), however, prefer view cameras because of the capability to control perspective. With a triple-extension bellows 4″ × 5″ camera such as the Linhof SuperTechnika V, the photographer can correct certain distortions such as “keystoning”, where the image ‘lines’ converge (i.e., photographing a building by pointing a typical camera upward to include the top of the building). Perspective correction lenses are available in the 35 mm and medium formats to correct this distortion with film cameras, and it can also be corrected after the fact with photo software when using digital cameras. The photographer can also extend the bellows to its full length, tilt the front standard and perform photomacrography (commonly known as ‘macro photography’), producing a sharp image with depth-of-field without stopping down the lens diaphram.
